ABOUT THe situation
We are Brady and Kari Hume, along with our seven children, a fourth-generation farming family in Logan County, Colorado. For more than two decades, we've lived and worked on our 156-acre farmstead outside Peetz — raising our family, running a small fabrication business, farming wheat, and improving our beloved property when time allows. We are fighting to be made "whole” after having our livelihood and property disrupted and misused. This has been an incredibly challenging journey while running a business, having our seventh child, and spending hundreds of hours investigating how this situation happened, what the law allows, and finding professionals to support us through the process.
WHO WE ARE
In 2024, Tallgrass Energy built the Logan Compressor Station just 951 feet from our front door — more than 400 feet closer than the distance the company reported to federal regulators. This compressor station sits over the bi-directional natural gas transporting Rockies Express Pipeline, called "REX”. It went in following a zoning change, without a local building permit and without the kind of public notice a project of this size would typically require.
Since then, we've lived with near-constant noise, low-frequency vibration we can feel inside our home and shop, and intermittent sulfur-like and chemical odors. The dispute has since grown to include the nearby Trailblazer Pipeline, which runs through our pasture roughly 800 feet from our home. That pipeline has carried natural gas across our land for over 40 years under a 1981 right-of-way agreement — but Tallgrass has converted it to carry carbon dioxide (CO2), a use that legal analysis confirms was never authorized under that agreement.
Our children can no longer play outside without experiencing sounds, vibrations, airborne toxins, concerning odors, and a large aesthetic eyesore.
Our fabrication business requires welding and plasma cutting, both open-flame activities in the presence of unannounced, pungent natural gas releases. Though these activities are inside our shop, air quality experts confirm that VOCs actually accumulate inside buildings and residences near facilities with emissions.
We’ve spent nearly two years trying to resolve this privately and in good faith. That didn't work. We've now filed suit — Hume, Brady et al v. Tallgrass Energy et al, Logan County District Court, case number 2026CV030052.
what happened
We didn't choose this fight, and we didn't take it public lightly. This site exists to organize media content, primarily. If possible, we’ll lay out what we've found — in public records, FERC filings, personal experience, and independent testing — as plainly and accurately as we can, for our neighbors, for journalists covering this story, and for anyone living near similar infrastructure who wants to understand what to look for.
why this site exists
Our preference has always been a private resolution: either the compressor station and pipeline are moved a safe distance from our home, or we're fairly compensated so we can relocate our family and business on our own terms. Short of that, we intend to see this through the courts. Corporations like Tallgrass know that this process is extremely expensive, slow, confusing, incredibly stressful and usually not in favor of the landowner. Lord-willing, we are committed to resolving this situation because we simply have no other choice.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR
Since the compressor station began operating, our family has experienced some symptoms consistent with what's documented in the medical and public health literature on living near this kind of infrastructure — and the CO2 conversion of the Trailblazer Pipeline raises a separate set of safety questions we believe our community deserves to understand. The short- and long-term health and safety impacts are of great concern to us.
