**Colorado Family of Nine Takes Legal Action Against Tallgrass Energy Over Trailblazer CO2 Pipeline and Compressor Station Dispute**
*Fourth-generation Logan County farmstead says company built compressor station after a simple zoning change, misstated key facts to federal regulators, and is transporting CO2 through the family's land without authorization*
PEETZ, Colo. — After nearly two years of trying to resolve the matter privately, a Logan County, Colorado family says it has run out of options and is now pursuing legal action against Tallgrass Energy, Rockies Express Pipeline, LLC, and Trailblazer Pipeline Company, LLC.
Brady and Kari Hume, along with their seven children, have lived and worked on their 156-acre farmstead outside Peetz, Colorado for more than two decades. In 2024, Tallgrass Energy constructed the Logan Compressor Station just 951 feet from the family's front door — more than 400 feet closer than the distance the company reported to federal regulators in its environmental assessment. The family says the station was built following a zoning change, with no local building permit required, and without the public notice ordinarily provided for a project of its scale.
Since the station began operating, the Humes say they have experienced near-constant noise, low-frequency vibration felt inside their home and fabrication shop when the compressors are running, and intermittent sulfur-like and chemical odors. The family has experienced symptoms from these factors and found that published medical journals expressly confirm short- and long-term health impacts. The company’s environmental assessment also confirms airborne VOCs blanket and extend well beyond the property.
The dispute has since expanded to include the Trailblazer Pipeline, which runs through their pasture a mere 800 feet from their home, a four-decades-old pipeline that has historically carried natural gas across the Hume property under a 1981 right-of-way agreement. Tallgrass has converted the pipeline to carry carbon dioxide (CO2) as part of a broader project — a use the Humes' legal counsel says is not authorized under the original agreement. The family alleges Tallgrass has been transporting CO2 across their land without a valid agreement to do so since at least September 2025.
The alleged trespass of CO2 through the pipeline outlined in the Complaint comes with a heavy concern in the event of a rupture. Can the decades-old pipeline sustain a different substance with the possibility of corrosive, and potentially toxic impurities within? This question and the frequent odors have caused the Hume family to consider temporary relocation multiple times. It will be no simple feat to relocate a family of nine and their business, nevertheless evacuate if explosion, health, or asphyxiation hazards continue. Upon contacting local first responders of the pipeline conversion, they had not yet been trained nor resourced as claimed by Tallgrass, adding further to the Humes’ concern of community preparedness for adverse events.
"We didn't choose this fight," said Brady Hume, a fourth-generation Logan County resident and owner of a fabrication business based on the property. "We tried for nearly two years to work directly with this company in good faith. We just want our family to be safe and healthy and our property to be quiet and peaceful." The Humes also feel the local community needs to be aware of the invisible presence of the CO2 pipeline and its risks.
The Humes say their preference has always been a private resolution — either relocation of the compressor station a safe distance from their home and the removal of the CO2 pipeline, or fair compensation that allows the family to relocate on their own terms and reimburses the expenses they've endured thus far. Absent a resolution, the family has recently moved forward with formal legal claims in Logan County Colorado.
